About Refractive Errors
At Bentz Eye Center in West Palm Beach, FL, our team specializes in common refractive errors, like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia (age-related vision loss), and astigmatism (abnormally shaped cornea). Refractive errors can cause various uncomfortable symptoms, which require glasses, contact lenses, or surgery to treat. Symptoms of refractive errors may include blurry vision, haziness, glares or halos near bright lights, squinting, eye strain, and headaches. To avoid these issues, we will review your visual acuity through a series of diagnostic tests. This will give us your prescription strength and help us discuss the best treatment options, such as glasses or contact lenses.

Refractive Error Treatments
Bentz Eye Center provides several, excellent options for common refractive errors. During your appointment, one of our eye doctors will perform a fitting for both glasses and contacts. We generally complete several diagnostic tests at this appointment, which help us assess your overall eye health. Following a review of your internal and external eye structures, we can determine the strength of your prescription with a phoropter. The phoropter is an instrument that carefully measures your prescription level. Once finished, you can visit our on-site optical shop for frames, or we have a wide selection of contact lenses. Often, patients can take home their contacts on the same day. If not, our team will order your contacts so you can have them as quickly as possible.

- Myopia (nearsightedness)
- Hyperopia (farsightedness)
- Presbyopia (age-related vision loss)
- Astigmatism (abnormally shaped cornea)
What causes refractive errors in the eyes?
Refractive errors happen when the shape of your eye prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina. This can be caused by the eyeball being too long or too short, changes in the shape of the cornea, or as a natural result of aging.
What are the symptoms of refractive errors?
If you have a refractive error in your eye, you will typically experience:
- Blurry vision

How do you test for refractive errors?
Refractive errors can be diagnosed during a routine eye exam. At Bentz Eye Center, in West Palm Beach, FL, our team of doctors will ask you to read a vision chart while they test a variety of lenses to determine the extent of your refractive error. This allows them to prescribe the proper correction prescription for either eyeglasses or contacts. Some people may opt for laser eye surgery to correct their vision.
