What Is Diabetic Eye Care?
Diabetes requires careful monitoring and treatment to manage your overall health. At Bentz Eye Center, our team specializes in diabetic eye care to protect your ocular health and eyesight. Without regular, comprehensive eye exams, you may experience severe eye conditions that can greatly impact your ability to see and perform daily activities, like driving. Unfortunately, diabetes can lead to an increased risk for developing glaucoma, macular edema, and diabetic retinopathy (damage to veins within your eye). Patients who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes should work with a skilled eye doctor who can provide treatments before these conditions cause irreparable damage. Please schedule an appointment with our West Palm Beach, FL ophthalmologist team so we can properly diagnose, stop, and handle diabetic eye disease before you experience severe symptoms. Proudly helping our West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, and Wellington, FL communities, we encourage you to reach out to our diabetic eye care specialists at Bentz Eye Center and learn how we can help you.

"I have been going to Bentz for 25 years. I missed 2020 because of covid. So I just went in April 2021, didn't know it had been sold. My insurance was accepted only to find out that it is for Medical only and then they say that now I have to pay for prescription. I have never ever had to. But my insurance is different. I need to get glasses so I had to pay, felt like I was being robbed. But no one tells you that the lens and glasses office are an independent corporation and doesn't take your insurance yet. Never going back. The front staff were nice and the doctor was polite. But this nickel and dime was not friendly. I understand they also had other complaints. No up front information so you can make a better decision."- M.R. / Google / May 25, 2021

What Are Symptoms of Diabetic Eye Disease?
In the long run, patients with uncontrolled blood sugar levels can sustain irreversible damage to the blood vessels within their eyes. High blood sugar levels cause the veins to increase in size and drain within the eye. If this occurs, the blood pressure in your eye increases, which leads to scarring and permanent damage. For patients who find it challenging to maintain their blood sugar, please schedule an appointment with one of our diabetic eye specialists in West Palm Beach, FL. Many diabetic eye conditions do not have noticeable symptoms until you have difficulty seeing. As the condition progresses, you may have common diabetic eye symptoms, such as:
- Vision loss
- Impaired vision
- Dark spots in the field of vision
- Flashes of light in your peripheral vision
- Color perception issues
How Are Diabetic Eye Conditions Managed?
At Bentz Eye Center, our knowledgeable and compassionate team of ophthalmologists performs diabetic eye exams to detect any structural issues. We will perform a series of diagnostic assessments to review your ocular health, provide treatment options, and decrease the chances of vision loss. Often, patients need their eyes dilated with specialized eye drops to look at the vessels and retina closely. You may also require a tonometry evaluation to measure your intraocular pressure (eyes' blood pressure). With a tonometry test, we can detect if you have glaucoma and provide treatment for it. Depending on your diabetic eye condition, you may need medications, eye injections, laser procedures, or other options. All patients receive a detailed treatment plan that outlines the strategy for managing their condition.
